On Oct. 1, August University will decommission Mimecast, a cloud cybersecurity service for archiving AU emails, and will begin using Microsoft Exchange Online Archiving Services.

The Microsoft service offers users archiving capabilities with the archive mailbox feature. An archive mailbox is a specialized mailbox that appears alongside the users’ primary mailbox folders in Outlook. Users can access the archive in the same way they access their primary mailboxes. In addition, they can search both their archives and primary mailboxes. This new feature will be much more user-friendly and easier to access than the previous Mimecast archiving service.

Emails will start populating within the Online Archive folder (see below) within seven days of July 24. This process will be automatic and require no action on your part. Further details will be provided as we move forward.

All emails will automatically be archived after 180 days, or six months, in the user’s inbox. Why do we archive? Email-borne threats like phishing and ransomware continue to impact organizations, especially higher learning institutions and hospitals, so we must remain vigilant.
